Titles

Titles in films are very important. Not only do they tell the audience about the people who produced the film, but they also help set the mood for the rest of the film. We decided to look at three different types of titles that we wanted to base ours on.

There's a typical order for the title credits which goes: Studio Name, Production Company, Producer's Name, Director's Name, Starring, Film Title, and we tried to stick to that.

The first film opening we looked at was Seconds. It was in black and white, with text over the top of it. It shows a series of images - which is what Ellie and I wanted to do originally with our rough cut, but it didn't look right with our film. We liked the idea of the black and white as this was a strong theme in all the titles we looked at.

We then looked at American Horror Story: Murder House, and we liked the way the music fit with the credits, and also how the credits themselves were set on a black screen so you could focus on the names themselves, and also added to the disjointed feeling of the whole piece.

And lastly we looked at Vinyl. We liked the relatively formal and serious looking font, which is what inspired our own use of font.

We used the font DIN alternate bold because it looked quite serious and formal, similar to Vinyl's font, and we chose to do them in black and white because all of the titles we looked at were in black and white too. We also felt it worked with the bleak and dark feeling of the film. We put them all on black backgrounds to give more impact like the American Horror Story title credits, and we made sure the music had impact for the credits.
